Cognitive Rehabilitation for Practicing Clinicians

Are you an OT or an SLP currently practicing in cognitive rehabilitation and interested in learning new assessment and treatment techniques?  Are you a psychologist or mental health provider who would like to understand more about how your clients learn and remember so they can be more successful with the tools you provide them?  Are you a PT or a chiropractor who would like to become more familiar with cognition and cognitive rehabilitation to increase your client’s adherence to therapy protocols?

The Cognitive Rehabilitation for Practicing Clinicians course is designed by practicing clinicians for practicing clinicians.  This interactive course combines didactics, real world tools and techniques, evidence reviews, and interactive learning experiences to expand your knowledge base and comfort level in working with both traditional and complex (dual diagnosis) cognitive rehabilitation clients.

Participants will review models of attention, memory, and executive function through both theoretical and practical lenses, identifying how the models can conceptually guide daily practice.  Evidence-based assessment and treatment approaches will be presented, along with exploration of how to address the real-world challenges clinicians sometimes face in implementing literature recommendations (efficacy versus effectiveness).  Discussions about how to encourage full participation and optimal recovery outcomes for traditional neurologic populations such as TBI, stroke, and age-related cognitive decline, as well as a variety of behavioral health populations, are facilitated.

Whether your clinical setting focuses on traditional inpatient and outpatient programming, cognitive Functional Capacity Evaluations, or other unique areas, this course will help turn assessment results into actionable treatment goals and activities.  With up to date evidence and references, this is a learning opportunity with “next day clinical application” that is relevant for both seasoned clinicians and those new to cognitive rehab.

Learning Outcomes

Cognitive Rehabilitation Foundations

1.  The participant will explore the functional profiles of mild, moderate, and severe injuries/cognitive deficits to standardize language used across disciplines, diagnoses, and settings.

2.  The participant will identify functional language hierarchies of cognitive performance to standardize language used across disciplines, diagnoses, and settings.

3.  The participant will identify compensation and remediation intervention approaches, discuss the evidence base supporting the use of these categories of intervention, and compare and contrast their clinical utility.

4.  The participant will explore the “Acquire – Apply – Adapt” training heuristic and identify how it can be formally implemented when training clients in new tasks/strategies.

5.  The participant will reproduce the Clinical Cognitive Processing model, discuss its applications for client education, and explore how it can be used to frame clinical decision making.

Cognitive Rehabilitation for Attention/Working Memory, Memory, and Executive Function Domains

6.  The participant will operationally define and explore clinically relevant cognitive domains, gross neuroanatomic correlates, and theoretical models supporting each domain.

7.  The participant will explore and critique evidence-based treatment designs and principles for each cognitive domain.

8.  The participant will identify the role of remediation protocols in cognitive rehabilitation as well as the transfer principles and tools required to ensure functional carryover of component improvement.

9.  The participant will explore “traditional” and “complicated” cognitive profiles, identify the impact of behavioral health diagnoses and motivational concerns on client presentations, and discuss moderation techniques to encourage the best possible functional outcomes.

10.  The participant will gain hands-on experience in evidence-based remediation and compensation treatment activities to increase their knowledge of clinically available tools and techniques.

Clinical Cognitive Assessment

11.  The participant will critically apply the test factor hierarchy concepts of safety, reliability, validity, practicality, and utility to the assessment of cognition.

12.  The participant will explore top-down and bottom-up evaluation approaches for cognition and identify strengths and vulnerabilities of each approach.

13.  The participant will compare and contrast clinical and non-clinical (FCE) cognitive assessment processes and identify appropriate applications of each.

14.  The participant will identify common domain-specific assessments of attention/working memory, memory, and executive functions and discuss strengths and limitations of the tools.

15.  The participant will identify the role of performance-based assessment and treatment in clinical settings and identify up to six potential clinical tools.

Matthew Dodson, OTD, OTR/L, has over a dozen years of experience addressing head injury and cognitive performance at clinical, administrative, and program development levels.  Known for an accessible instructional style that breaks down complex technical and theoretical concepts by emphasizing real-world application and humor, he provides training in head injury, cognition, and program development and evaluation. 

After having the privilege of developing and managing outpatient TBI OT programming at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center from 2009-2013, he worked as a consultant for the Department of Defense both in the U.S. and abroad for rehabilitation program development and evaluation from 2013-2018.  Serving those who Serve is a driving motivation for his clinical, educational, and advocacy efforts and he volunteers with multiple combat veteran organizations.

As the owner of Colorado-based Braintrust Services, he delivers clinical cognitive rehabilitation and optimization services to a wide spectrum of clientele both in-person and virtually.  He conducts workshops across North America, has an active forensic practice, and provides professional mentorship and consultation services to a wide variety of clinicians and health care organizations.
